This is a tremendous wine … a rare surprise and treat … the Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos des Argilliéres from Domaine Vincent Dureuil-Janthial.
A Nuits-Saint-George 1er cru, made by a Rully producer – and not just by any Rully producer – it’s perhaps the most talented Rully producer – and well up there amongst the best of the vignerons in the whole of Burgundy.
Vincent Dureuil-Janthial is brilliant … and by the end of this article I will perhaps even be able to spell his name correctly.
It’s definitely my pleasure to pay tribute to this estate – and especially the Clos des Argilliéres .. lets go to Premeaux.
Domaine Dureuil-Janthial
Domaine Dureuil-Janthial is located in Rully – south of Côte de Beaune – in Côte Chalonnaise. The Dureuil has been in Rully since the 13th century. Vincent Dureuil began his work at the family estate in the mid 1990s. The estate now comprise of 17 ha divided between 20 appellations.
The main part of the vineyards are located in Rully, but a few wines are made outside the home soil. Two whites from Puligny-Montrachet – Corvée de Vignes and Champ Gains – whereas two reds from Côte de Nuits normally are on the program – a generic Nuits-Saint-Georges and the Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos des Argilliéres.
Domaine Dureuil-Janthial this is an estate to sample … the Rully wines are tremendous.
Premeaux-Prissy – the missing appellation
The Premeaux appellation was sort of lost in the classification .. and the vineyards are now a part of the large and sadly very diverse Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation.
To the north of the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation we have one or perhaps even two sections, that are more closely related to Vosne-Romanée. South of the Nuits-Saint-Georges town we have the “classic Nuit-Saint-Georges” area with vineyards like Les Saint-Georges, and after this section we have the last and southern part of Nuits-Saint-Georges – the Premeaux area – or if you like the Premeaux-Prissey appellation.
- Clos des Grandes Vignes
- Les Forêts
- Aux Perdrix
- Aux Corvées
- Aux Corvées Pagets
- Clos St. Marc
- Les Argilliéres
- Clos Arlot
- Clos de la Maréchale
The Premeaux appellation – most of it shown on the map above – is in my view a very interesting area with several monopoles and a area that has experienced a tremendous improvement in quality the last 10 to 15 years. Just take Clos de la Maréchales from Domaine J.-F. Mugnier, Clos des Grandes Vignes made by Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, and finally Clos des Corvées from Domaine Prieure-Roch.
