Back in Burgundy for a serie of tastings of the 2017 and a bit of the 2018.
The 2017s confirmered that they are pretty wines, and while some yields are on the high side, most wines are delightful and rather classical – and relatively lightfooted compared to the 2015s, the 2016s – and for that matter also the rich and weighy 2018s.
So the 2017s are indeed a chance to find Burgundes with a more normal density and weight – while waiting for the other bigger vintages.
Make no mistake – the 2017s can be truly lovely and pretty, and they are in my view very important for the consumers, as they also offer lovely mid-term drikability.
The tastings –
During the days we tasted the 2017s at Domaine Arnoux Lachaux, Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat and Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg.
Furthermore we visited Domaine Groffier, Faiveley and Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé.
And finally Georges Noëllat, Mikulski, and Morey-Coffinet as well as Domaine Moron-Garcia and Domaine Bruno Clavelier.
Quite a bunch .. and a lot of lovely wines showing all the qualities of the 2017 vintage … lovely juice.
Roi Chambertin
Thursday we also had the opportunity to taste a large range of 2017s from the Gevrey appellations at Roi Chambertin.
A lovely treat – and a fine opportunity to taste the different wines of the appellation – fine new producers can be found here.
The 2018s ,, a look
The 2018s are rich and generous wines – in some cases perhaps on the rich side, in other cases more balanced – yet still on the quite generous side.
It’s very very early, and only due to the current auction, one should consider these wines now. The 2017s in my view have so much to offer if you choose correctly.
There is no doubt that the 2018s are exciting – but to compare with 1947 or other famous hot vintages is very early, just as time will only show the true quality of the vintage. Rich they are – some presumably too rich .. time will show.
Of the 2018 I tasted I found both very rich and weighy wines, but also more balanced wines – although big and generous – still balanced and vivid.
The 2018s are for later .. although excíting.
