Visit Domaine Thomas-Collardot – tasting the 2018s from cask

Domaine Thomas-Collardot was one of my favourite discoveries in 2018 – a relatively new and very small estate making interesting, vivid and pure wines in Puligny-Montrachet.

Jacqueline Collardot and her son Matthieu have done it again in the warm and sunny 2018 vintage: They have managed to produce fresh and vivid wines from this hot year. The Thomas-Collardot wines almost always defy gravity, and have maintained structure and vibrant nerve with a tremendous expression of terroir even in this hot vintage.

Visiting Domaine Thomas-Collardot in Puligny

I was very impressed by the 2018s when I tasted them in early July; tremendous balance and vivid freshness. What do Jacqueline and Matthieu Collardot do to maintain this vivid quality even in 2018?

This estate might be small, but the quality so far is tremendous, and with new vineyards on the way, I see a fine future for Domaine Thomas-Collardot.

The style is clear and consistent: vivid, pure and crisp wines, fine acidity even in the 2018 vintage – what one would call almost perfect ripeness; not an easy task in 2018. The freshness and energy found in the recent vintages are a very good sign for future quality. I’m honestly quite stunned by the balance of Les Enseignères.

Tasting the 2018s from Domaine Thomas-Collardot

I had the opportunity to taste the 2018s from cask, from the Bourgogne blanc to the top lieu-dit Les Enseignères and the two 1er crus, Puligny-Montrachet Hameau de Blagny and Les Folatières.

Domaine Thomas-Collardot Bourgogne Les Petits Poiriers 2018

The Bourgogne blanc Les Petits Poiriers is a splendid effort for the vintage. As in previous years, it has very fine intensity, delightful focus and vividness – resisting the hotter side of the 2018 vintage. The Thomas-Collardot style is a fine match for hotter years, with its citrus-infused and mineral-driven style. Truly fine energy in this wine.

Domaine Thomas-Collardot Puligny-Montrachet Derrière la Velle 2018

The village wines are different from each other, although Derrière la Velle and Les Houlières are on equal terms quality wise. Derrière la Velle is the more generous wine, coming from a terroir just north of the village. Fine Puligny character, rather outgoing and exuberant, with a slight opulence compared to Les Houlières. While this is a delightful wine, I prefer the others in this lineup of villages.

Domaine Thomas-Collardot Puligny-Montrachet Les Houlières 2018

This is close to the route nationale, below the village to the south, below Les Tremblots. A somewhat more vivid and vibrant wine, yet not necessarily better for all palates. Lovely expression of the terroir, with citrus-infused minerality (the house style), giving the wine vivacious freshness even in this hot vintage.
