Here he goes again – the 2019s are outrageously delightful, etc…
And yes, here is another tribute to this fine vintage, but also a large and loud “chapeaux” to Domaine Henri Gouges, which has made the best wines I have ever tasted from this fine estate.
This is indeed a big, blunt statement, as the history of Henri Gouges is long and very proud. I do, however, feel very strongly regarding the 2019s. So here we go again.
The Gouges 2019s have perfect balance, effortless energy and a glorious fruity expression, with their fresh, cool, Nordic fruit – the lingonberries and cloudberries I have found in other wines from other estates in this vintage.
The result is energy and vivacity rarely found in the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation – or in Gouges wines for that matter. These wines really are singing.
The 2019s are from a relatively hot year, but strangely the wines possess a lovely, cool energy that gives them true lift and sparkle (in the figurative sense).
The effortless style really takes Gouges to new levels, and with ripe, healthy grapes and no hail damage, the 2019s are destined for greatness.
Impressions of the 2019s from Domaine Henri Gouges
We tasted the red 2019s with Antoine Gouges from cask in the cellar – aside from the entry-level wines that were not ready for tasting.
Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Chênes Carteaux 2019
A relatively unknown vineyard, yet located just above Les Saint-Georges and next to Vaucrains. This is vivacious, with juicy balance and expressive cherry notes; a relatively modest 13% alcohol gives a certain lightness. Delightfully balanced, with some lingonberry notes adding to the fresh feel of this wine.
