The Grande Dame 1998 from Veuve Clicquet is a surprisingly good effort for the vintage. In the bouquet apple, citrus – sweet grapefruit and lemon, with hints of almonds, toast and yeast. On the palate pear, almonds, caramel, sweet apples, fresh lemon. Very nice balance and complexity with a very good acidity for the vintage – powerful but still quite elegant. A very fine effort in this vintage … just lacking the ultimate freshness in the acidity to merit a outstanding rating.
