Terroir Insight: Domaine des Croix Corton-Charlemagne

David Croix has opened my eyes to red Corton, with his work at both Camille Giraud and Domaine des Croix.

I have, however, little experience with the Corton-Charlemagne from David, as I usually taste his reds quite early in their maturation, when the whites are not yet ready for sampling.

The Corton-Charlemagne is from vineyards owned by David and his investors, and his parcels are located at the top of the hill in the Le Charlemagne lieu-dit, on the Aloxe-Corton side of the Corton hill.

Let’s climb the hill and look at the last des Croix plots.

The Domaine des Croix plots of Corton-Charlemagne

David Croix makes three Cortons: La Vigne au Saint, Greves and Corton-Charlemagne from Le Charlemagne.

The estate owns two plots in Le Charlemagne, one of the largest lieux-dits on the Corton hill at 16.95 ha – surpassed only by En Charlemagne and Les Bressandes.

Domaine des Croix owns 0.2487 ha in total at the top of the vineyard, divided into two plots with some distance between them. Towards the Pougets side is cadastre no. 45, of 0.1254 ha. Moving closer to En Charlemagne there is plot no. 19, of 0.1233 ha.

Honestly, I can’t recall ever tasting this wine. So that’s something to look forward to!
