Burgundy – September 2024

The 2017 vintage is turning into a veritable treasure chest of gorgeously expressive reds and whites.

They are not fully mature but many of them can be smashingly beautiful. They have a gorgeously playful fruit with lovely and lively complexity.

Global warming sweetness is under reasonable control. Both the reds and the whites are showing some of their very best sides.

Some of the reds will develop quite rapidly, especially if they are high in volatile acidity … but to be honest, drink now if they are showing well. Whites will keep longer and are, on most occasions, greater wines.

Two 2017s are especially worth mentioning. The Pierre Olivier Garcia Corton Baie-par-Baie 2017 is just so floral and perfumed. A treat now. Truly, a perfumed and sexy Corton! Not the biggest vintage, but so expressive.

The second wine Domaine Coche-Dury Les Caillerets is an almost perfect 2017 … such a treat and lovely now. They come better and bigger but this is just an entry-level 1er Cru from Coche.

This is fine for me and levels beyond the village Meursault. The bouquet starts with mature notes and tells the story of a wine that will unfold and give more enjoyable moments in the years to come.
