Vintage of the Moment – Vintage d’émotion
Vintage 2013
Burgundy – October 2024
The 2013 vintage was an unlikely candidate for vintage of the moment or vin d’émotion when the wines were launched, as many of the reds were slightly or quite extracted and edgy.
Many of them are now mature or close to full maturity. Both red and whites offer a gorgeous cool complexity of mature notes … not very ripe phenolics, but a beautiful older school style with some tremendous tension and verve.
This vintage has lovely energy, most likely coming from the slightly unripe phenolics. It’s a treat now and, in my view, many 1er Crus should be consumed within the next 5 years. This is not a vintage to keep for 20 more years as they will dry out. Love the lively complexity … vin d’émotion for me at least.
Two 2013s are especially worth mentioning. The Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Cherbaudes 2013. Mature to fully mature with complex notes of sous-bois, red forest raspberries, and hints of orange zest. Floral and expressive with this lovely forest-floor complexity. It’s not a big wine, but an elegant and fulfilling one.
The second wine Domaine Comte Lafon Meursault Charmes 2013 …. The first vintage with Diam corks. Quite mature with a whiff of hazelnuts with lively fruit still giving it power and length. Has some volume and complexity extending through a long finish. Dried fruit and stone fruit with mango and a hint of melon – a saline edge. Not monumentally complex, but offers gorgeous drinking. Drink from now.
