It is always a balance … when we can use the term Vin de soif. In my book, all wines can, in principle, be a vin de soif … a term that relates perfectly to joie de vivre …
“Joie de vivre” is a beautiful French phrase often used to express a cheerful enjoyment of life, an exultation of spirit, and general happiness.
I have discussed vin de soif in this old article from 2020 …. and it still apply.
When we are talking Grand Cru, it would be somewhat of a strange term to use, as most grand crus require time to unfold, as do the best 1er crus …
Looking at Chanterêves’ range, the term vin de soif is a term that resonates very well with the style and the people who enjoy their wines … and most of the wines are drunk young with no thoughts of cellar potential and other trivial data. Enjoy like there is no tomorrow … with friends and other lovers of lively pinot.
I admit it … I do see Chanterêves as a a prototype of the new vin de soif … joie de vivre in the urban way
The wines are quite light-footed, yet, with both intensity and different degrees of depth of the terroir. If the terroir is prominent, the wine will show it … but even the lesser terroirs are still delivering on the vin de soif side.
Nevertheless, these are wines that are for casual enjoyment … and deliver true pinot time after time. Bravo…
When it comes to the biggest wines …. the Corton Charlemagne, the term vin de soif is perhaps not entirely suitable … but these one or two cuvées do not change my view on Chanterêves …
The low sulphur is a part of the package… as are the Diam corks. They will keep … but vin de soif they are … and suits many – even me.
Chanterêves is good at marketing and have positioned their wines well towards the hip and younger crowd … and the lineup of Aligotés is a stroke of genius… more will follow as there are many exciting terroirs available …
To the 2022 reds – tasted on May 30th 2024
Chanterêves Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune Paris l’Hôpital 2022
The Hautes Côtes de Beaune Paris Hôpital is from Maranges and comes from vines planted on granite soil. Nice delicate fruit … elegant and coolish for the vintage. Not an aperitif wine, but more a wine for lighter main course. Lovely tension … as most of the other Chanterêves wines have in 2022.

Chanterêves Chorey-lès-Beaune Champs Longs 2022
The Chorey-lès-Beaune is a lovely wine from Chanterêves’ own vineyard. Quite intense and deep fruit, proving that Chorey can produce some lovely juicy vin de soif. This just goes to show that these small appellations can give so much enjoyment.
(Drink from 2024) – Very Good – (88p) –
Chanterêves Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Godeaux 2022
The Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Godeaux is a lovely quite deep wine. Quite a step up from the Chorey, but remaining with a liveliness and fresh tension. Fresh and vivid for the vintage …
(Drink from 2024) – Fine – (89p) –
Chanterêves Savigny-lès-Beaune Dessus de Montchenevoy 2022
The Savigny Dessus de Montchenevoy is another step up to where the emotions really start to play. More intense and lively than the previous wine … lovely deep mid-palate … delicate fruit … lovely … just lovely. Very juicy fruit for the appellation … vin d’émotion.
(Drink from 2024) – Fine – (91p) –
Chanterêves Beaune Les Blanches Fleur 1er 2022
The Beaune Les Blanchots de Fleur is not really unfolding for the moment. Slight reduction – nothing to worry about – and a somewhat more dense setting. A nice wine, but is not ringing any bells currently for me.
(Drink from 2024) – Very Good – (89p) –
