A lovely tasting and lunch with Pascal and Odilon Marchand in the beautiful Beaune tasting rooms.

Diving back into the vivid 2023 vintage … Pascal nailed the 2023s – taking the Marchand-Tawse estate to a new level.
The 2023s are terroir- and joy-driven, with magnificent transparency of its energetic and juicy fruit. The phenolic ripeness works very well in most of their wines; there are some truly delightful wines at every level.
It is always a treat to taste with Pascal and Odilon Marchand … they are clever and cheerful chaps.

Marchand-Tawse Entry and Village level
The entry-level Côteaux Bourguignons 2023 is showing beautifully, with the combination of Pinot Noir and Gamay showing beautiful energy. The phenolics seem to be spot on … no overripe Gamay here … and the vivid energy of the Pinot is giving loads of energy. (87p – ). Even better than the first tasting.
On the other end of the village level, we find a new wine – Gevrey CPB or, more correctly, Clos Prieur-Bas (90-91p – ). The Maume massale clone really shines in this cuvée…. great creation … a great Gevrey village.
Of the 1er Crus, we have Beaune 1er Cru Clos du Roi 2023, an exciting wine … smoky and vivid … a delightful glass with a rather atypical Beaune note (90-91p – )
The Grand Crus
Clos Saint-Denis is a gorgeous expression of Pinot. Lovely, the detailed mineral note … for me, more balanced and refined than the Clos de la Roche. This is a discussion to be had … where I normally prefer the Clos Saint-Denis (94-95p – )
