Good morning Burgundy … again early … hmmm 5:30 in the morning !!
Thursday really offered clear but also quite cold weather. Good for harvesting but not all ideal for the development of the ripeness. We need heat … and Friday is not providing it!
It is important to note that harvest in October was seen before Global warming entered the scene. 1978 harvest started October 7th …meaning a finish of the harvest late October – Jancis Robinson – Burgundy picking and flowering dates 1975–2020.
A late Indian Summer can not be ruled out … and while waiting the vignerons have the possibility of gaining some ripeness.
But as always botrytis and other issues can change the picture … complex. Is waiting the correct decision?
As ripeness seems very difficult for the whites it is important to note that I am sure that the rule makers will look at the limits of chaptalisation … if this is needed.
There will be wine in any instance … but what quality of wine is another question and matter.
Harvest moves on
Harvest reached a new stage when some of the big estates in Vosne-Romanée entered the game … Domaine Meo-Camuzet began harvest on Thursday, September 12th. And we expect many to follow soon … in the weekend or early next week.
The results are fermenting in the cuverie
As always the work at the sorting table is very important to ensure the best possible quality reaches the fermentation vats … more about this later … as I look at the focus and quality of the sorting process.
Here is the first 2024 from Domaine Pierre-Olivier Garcia … always a proud and important moment. The Corton was harvested on Tuesday, September 10th.
Harvest wines …
Harvest also include pleasure and nice times with the fellow geeks … here are a few nice bottles from the dinner last night with Danish friends. Attending was the Danish importer of Domaine Pierre-Olivier Garcia – Tavs Ritzau – who this year manged to get more than 25 harvesters to join in from Denmark …. Bravo!
