The rain came on August 27th – 49 mm in Nuits-Saint-Georges. The rain was scattered, and some areas got quite a lot, while others only got a few drops.
Comte Liger-Belair began harvest on August 29th with Clos de Chateau, Clos des Grande Vignes and Vosne Chaumes. DRC got some more Grands Echezeaux after starting on August 27th – and is getting up to speed.
Bizot harvested Vosne-Romanée Les Jachées – one of the top villages of Vosne … battling with Clos de Chateau, Clos de Eugenie and Clos Goilotte.
I had a quick chat with Véronique Drouhin just next to Grands Echezeaux as she was inspecting the Côte de Nuits plots … she is quite optimistic regarding the harvest in Côte de Nuits – after a good but small harvest in Côte de Beaune.
The key to greatness
It is pretty clear that the phenolic ripeness should still improve in many plots in Nuits. The pips in the grapes are still green in quite many plots – indicating less than optimal phenolic ripeness. The heat and the drought have delayed the ripeness process, and in some instances, ripening is still blocked, it seems.
The question is whether the grapes are blocked for good or if further ripening is possible? The answer will come during the next week …

Weather and progress
Temperatures are cooler now and the weather is quite unstable … next big hurdle is the rain on Sunday August 31st.
Rain is forecasted on many days, making the harvest heavy in muddy shoes or even boots … that’s Burgundy in a nutshell.
Personally, I have left the field work to younger people … hard to follow 20-year-olds in the vineyard, I must admit.
