Domaine Henri Richard is a new name for me at least – but a nevertheless a name that should not be overlook henceforward.
I tasted a few 2013s from Domaine Henri Richard when visiting the Gevrey Wine Club at Hotel Les Deux Chevres in Gevrey-Chambertin … three very delicious 2013s.
Domaine Henri Richard – a little about the estate
Domaine Henri Richard is located in Gevrey on the D974 a little south of Domaine Trapet. It’s a family estate – fourth generation according to the website … owned by Margeret and Jean Bastien and their children Sarah and Richard – with Sarah Bastien and Guillaume Berthier running the estate today.
The estate has a nice selection of vineyards – with plots in Mazoyerés-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin and the village terroir Aux Corvées.
The estate has been biodynamically certified – (Agriculture Biologique) since 2005.
Domaine Henri Richard – The wines
As mentioned I tasted three wines at the Gevrey Wine Club at Hotel Les Deux Chevres.
Domaine Henri Richard, Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Corvées 2013
The first wine was the 2013 Gevrey village Aux Corvées from a terroir just south of the village close to D974. A classic Gevrey village, lovely red and dark berry fruit, underbush with a earthy minerality. On the palate fine fruit for this level – pure and focused with a good length. The fruit is juicy offering a quite refined experience especially considering the vintage. A textbook Gevrey village … and a good one. (87 – 88p)
Domaine Henri Richard, Gevrey-Chambertin Les Tuileries 2013
The next wine is the the Gevrey Les Tuileries another and more “exotic” village, coming from a plot within the Aux Corveés village vineyard. This cuvée is made with a large percentage of millerandage berries, and this renders another more lush and generous dimension to the wine. The bouquet offer more red fruit with hints of pomegranate, amaretto cherries and red currant … delicately expressive supported by a quite filigree expression of terroir. On the palate rich and generous for a village – lovely sweet red fruit on the midpalate – very delicate and almost sensual for a 2013. A truly deligtful village .. very good indeed.
(Drink from 2024) – Very Good (89 – 90p) – Tasted 05/11/2016
Domaine Henri Richard, Charmes Chambertin 2013
The next step or should I say two is the Charmes Chambertin. The Charmes Chambertin is a very harmonius effort – classic in the best sense of the word. The bouquet offer layred fruit – both dark and red berries – notes of cassis, red currant and boysenberries. Lovely energy in the fruit – supported by deep earthy mineral notes. On the palate quite intense with a nice organic feel to the quite ample midpalate fruit – it’s very well made, and offer a quite refined side of the 2013 vintage. A lot of wines lesser wines are made from the large Charmes-Chambertin vineyard … this is a true Charmes grand cru .. classic yet refined offering a lovely juicy drinkability. A fine effort indeed.
A lovely collection of 2013s from Henri Richard … need to taste more from this slightly overlooked producer. Especially the Les Tuileries has impressed me with it’s vibrant midpalate energy and verve …
