I have tasted 2015 Burgundy reds in March, June and November 2016 and found some special wines in this vintage – wines with extraordinary qualities .. wines that seem to have an extra level of energy and tension.
In June I struggled to see the pattern and the key to find these wines – but finally in November I found one of the keys to this phenomenon.
The heat, the sun and the freshness
The 2015 vintage is a hot vintage and all about maintaining the freshness to balance the rich, generous and quite abundant fruit.
The freshness is influenced by many factors, as both the pruning of the wines, the clones, the harvest time and the sun exposure of the plot will influence the acidity and PH even before the wine reach the press.
Some vineyards are hot due to micro climate and exposure – and the freshness can to a certain degree be controlled by the harvest time and other controllable parameters as pruning of the wines. In the end one can make a very fine 2015 reds from these hotter plots – but these vineyards have not produced these outstandingly energetic 2015s that are made under some special circumstances.
One key to find some outstanding 2015 red Burgundies
When tasting through a lot of 2015 reds I have found some wines with extraordinay depth and vibrancy in the midpalate fruit .. the fruit is almost charged with energy adding to the tremendous depth of the fruit.
