Terroir Insight: Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanee Aux Brulées

Most of the wines from Domaine Leroy are rare and elusive and one of the smallest cuvées is the Vosne-Romanee Aux Brulées made from a few tiny plots located on the border to the Leroy holdings in Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux Monts.

The border to the Leroy holdings in Beaux-Monts is in fact almost invisible … and therefore the holdings in Aux Brulées are often overlooked.

So let’s go to the northern end of Aux Brulées.

Brulées – three vineyards in one

Vosne-Romanee Aux Brulées and the 1er cru part of Vosne-Romanee La Combe Brulée is often considered as one vineyard, as very few wines are labelled La Combe Brulée. 

But in fact there are three sections – the southern section of Aux Brulées (1), the northern sections of Aux Brulées (2), and lastly the 1er cru section. of La Combe Brulées (3) – see map below.

The Domaine Leroy plots in Vosne-Romanee Aux Brulées

Domaine Leroy own three plots of Aux Brulées, located at the bottom of the large holdings in Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts. 

In total the area of these plots is 0.2713 ha, and they are in fact an integrated part of the Les Beaux-Monts vineyard of Domaine Leroy – with the rows of vines continuing down from Les Beaux Monts.

The wines are nevertheless vinified separately and bottled accordingly, although they appear to come from the same vineyard.

As always with Burgundy the soil and micro climate can change quite dramatically within a few metres, and therefore yield a wine with a significantly different expression of terroir.

In this case the border – see map below – is almost invisible as Domaine Leroy is the owner on both sides of the border – see map below.
