Terroir View: Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots

The Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots is in my view slowly but surely raising it’s game in the Liger-Belair lineup, after a somewhat less focused start in the 2006 vintage and the following years.

Now 13 years later we see more definition and a more precise wine – now made under the biodynamic regime that was introduced in 2008.

So lets take a closer look at the Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Les Suchots ..

Wine and people

With more than 200 years of history in Burgundy the Liger-Belair family have a very strong tradition to build on. Louis-Michel Liger-Belair took over the estate in 2000 and began to make wines again at this famous estate – slowly but surely introducing new vineyards.

In the 2000 vintage he only made Vosne-Romanée La Colombière, Clos du Château, Les Chaumes (1.5 ha). The estate was expanded in 2002 when the Aux Reignots was added as well as the Grand Cru La Romanée – in total (1,6 ha).

In 2006 the next large expansion was done when Louis-Michel had the possibility to take over the vineyards from the Lamadon family – an old sharecropper of the estate – located just south of Clos du Chateau below the Liger-Belair estate. The Lamadon estate included a large parcel of Echezeaux, Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Suchots, Les Petits Monts and Les Brûlées, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Aux Cras, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint Georges Laviere – in total 5.5 ha. In 2008 the entire Domaine was converted to biodynamic growing and has been certified biodynamic by Ecocert since 2012 under the Biodyvin label – one of the two certifying bodies.

Finally in 2012 Louis-Michel Liger-Belair acquired Clos des Grandes Vignes a monepole located in Premeaux in the southern part of Nuits-Saint-Georges.
