Edouard Confuron (a member of the widespread Confuron family) is part of the relatively low-profile Confuron-Gindre estate, which is in Vosne-Romanée just below La Grande Rue next to Domaine Meo-Camuzet. Edouard is working with his father, but is slowly – and successfully – making his mark on the wines.
But there’s more: Edouard has started his own estate, also in Vosne, but below the road and using some of the vineyards from the family estate.
Domaine Edouard Confuron
At his new estate, Edouard is free to follow his vision and make the wines that he likes himself, with no constraints. He began in 2021 – not the easiest year – and a 100%-whole-cluster vinification was not always possible due to the weather and the resulting quality of the harvest.
In 2022, conditions were better quality-wise, but the yields were high, which again limited the whole-cluster possibilities, as making whole-cluster wines demands more vat space.
Making wine is, as with many things, the art of the possible.
Let’s go!
It’s important to underline that new domaines should have room to experiment and find their style. Edouard has some nice family vineyards that he can explore at this stage, and this exploration does result in some variation in style and perceived quality.
I prefer some of the wines to others. Perhaps Edouard does as well, and has things he wants to adjust; this is how life goes.
The 2022s are better, but they could perhaps have improved even more if there had been room in the cellar to play with more whole-cluster grapes. Who knows? And in reality, the destemmed wines are also doing very well.
Domaine Edouard Confuron Bourgogne 2022
The Bourgogne Rouge is vivid, and displays the generous character of the 2022s. It was destemmed due to the lack of cellar space. This is deep and fairly intense, with around 15% new oak. I really appreciate forward, rich Bourgogne. What can I say? I like this!
