It’s always a privilege to meet up with my vigneron neighbour Pascal Marchand in Nuits-Saint-Georges. He is one of the most knowledgeable winegrowers in Burgundy, and it’s a treat to hear his views, which are based on vast knowledge and long experience. This is how I learn!
Pascal is a great winemaker, and even with bought grapes, he produces wines of impressive quality. When we reach the top domaine wines the quality level rises even further, with fruit from vineyards owned by the Marchand-Tawse group.
And importantly, Pascal has great help from his co-winemaker Mark Fincham, a very capable vigneron himself. And winemaker Thomas Dinel is also part of the team, along with Pascal’s two sons. It’s a strong group.
The qualities of the Marchand-Tawse estate
The main quality of the wines made by and under Pascal Marchand is drinkability: They drink well and bring pleasure. These are the basic, but necessary, qualities of a vin d’émotion.
Pascal can take negociant wines – the terroirs, the grapes – and reveal their qualities like few others. Some wines have emotional characteristics, others do not. But if the potential is there, chances are the team at Marchand-Tawse will find it.
The 2022s chez Marchand-Tawse
As expected, the 2022s showed well here, although quite differently from the more classic/traditional 2021s. I asked to taste only 30 samples, as I find that tasting more than that overwhelms my palate. Marchand-Tawse makes more than 50 wines each year.
Marchand-Tawse Bourgogne Côte d’Or 2022
The Bourgogne Cote d’Or is a delightful wine; 60% comes from the Cote de Nuits. It shows nice intensity and good concentration considering it’s a big cuvee, with 17,000 bottles made. This will be an enjoyable wine with lighter chicken dishes, as 2022 does have delightful ripeness.
(Drink From 2024) – Good (86p) –
Marchand-Tawse Côte de Nuits Village 2022
From the core terroirs of Cote de Nuits Village in Corgoloin, this uses 10-15% whole clusters. I love the vivid and fruity style of the 2022s. The oak is present, but contributes to the hedonistic qualities.
(Drink From 2026) – Very Good (87-88p) –
Domaine Tawse Beaune 1er Cru Clos du Roi 2022
The Clos du Roi is made with 15% whole clusters, and has nice acidity for the vintage. There’s a clear mineral note, good intensity, and a fine hedonistic feel. That said, it does not really set the hill on fire.
(Drink From 2030) – Very Good+ (89-90p)
Domaine Tawse Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavieres 2021
The Savigny Lavieres is showing well, with the lively fruit and silkiness of 80-year-old vines. With 20% whole clusters and a sensual fruity feel, I like this cuvee a lot. An emotional wine that rocks my boat – slightly.
(Drink From 2030) – Very Good+ (90p) –

Marchand-Tawse Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru La Petite Charmotte
I do not think this is a 1er a typo perhaps?
Do you know the source of the grapes for their Clos des Corvees Pagets?
cheers

Yes Petite Charmotte is a village … corrected. I know the source and I am sure you can figure this out yourself looking at the ownes … there is an article covering this. I only has this as a comment from other producers … not confirmed.
