Musigny is in my view one of the greatest Grand Crus in Burgundy rivalling at least some of the Grand Crus of Vosne-Romanee.
While Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is the dominant owner on Musigny with almost 70% of the vineyard, the rest of the vineyard is divided between 10 owners.
The Musigny Grand Cru has three main sections – from the north Les Musigny or Grands Musigny – the main section. South of Les Musigny we find Les Petits Musigny – a de Vogüé monopole, and lastly we have a “recent” addition to the Musigny vineyard comprising of some plots in the climate La Combe d’Orveau (added to Musigny in 1929 and 1989) – see map below.
Musigny – the current owners
I have been working on ownership maps for the Musigny vineyard for two years now, and it has been a quite slow proces … and there still are some unconfirmed details, but I feel it’s now ready to be published in this format.
Looking at Musigny the complex part is Les Musigny as the two other sections only have one owner each – so lets go to Les Musigny.
Owners of Musigny – “Les Musigny”
Les Musigny is a quite large and rather complex vineyard, with many small plots. To present the ownership maps I have divided Les Musigny into two sections … the main section and the plots below the road from Chateau Clos de Vougeot towards Chambolle.
Owners – Main section of Les Musigny
The main section is the most complex, as we have 9 owners in a quite limited area – see map below.
- Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé – 2.9273 ha
- Domaine J.F. Mugnier – 1.1358 ha
- Maison Joseph Drouhin – 0.6720 ha
- Domaine Leroy – 0.2700 ha
- Domaine Vougeraie – 0.2104 ha
- Maison Louis Jadot – 0.1665 ha
- Domaine Faiveley – 0.1318 ha
- Domaine Drouhin-Laroze – 0.1193 ha
- Domaine Georges Roumier – 0.0996 ha
The ownership table above show that Vogüe is the largest owner on Les Musigny … and with the latest acqusition by Domaine Faiveley … the smallest owner in this section of the vineyard is now Domaine Georges Roumier. There are however even smaller owners below the road.
It should be noted that Les Petits Musigny is a monopole owned by Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé – bringing the total vineyard area owned by Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé up to 7.1208 ha.
Owners – Les Musigny below the road
There are four plots of Les Musigny located below the road going from Chateau Clos de Vougeot towards Chambolle Musigny.
Only two of these cadastre plots are planted with vines, the other plots are very small and presumably not suitable for producing wine.
The map below show the two wine producing plots below the road. The largest plot – 0.0760 ha (10 on the map) is now owned by Domaine Tawse – a plot that was recently acquired from Christian Confuron in Vougeot.
The other plot (11) .. only 156 square meters is now also owned by Domaine Tawse – it was originally planted by André Pocheret of Monthelie-Douhairet-Porchere but he recently sold the plot to Domaine Tawse. So Domaine Tawse have produced from both plots from the 2014 vintage and onwards.
The people behind the Domaine Tawse ownership are Moray Tawse and John Harris (a Canadian) who owns 50% each of both plots.
The owners of Musigny Grand Cru
If we combine all the sections of Grand Cru Musigny the ownership is divided in the following way.
- Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé – 7.1208 ha
- Domaine J.F. Mugnier – 1.1358 ha
- Domaine Jacques Prieur – 0.7700 ha
- Maison Joseph Drouhin – 0.6720 ha
- Domaine Leroy – 0.2700 ha
- Domaine Vougeraie – 0.2104 ha
- Maison Louis Jadot – 0.1665 ha
- Domaine Faiveley – 0.1318 ha
- Domaine Drouhin-Laroze – 0.1193 ha
- Domaine Georges Roumier – 0.0996 ha
- Domaine Tawse – 0.0916 ha
Historic ownership of Musigny
The ownership history of Musigny is quite complex and not very well documented.
I have therefore decided to research this separately for each producer/owner of Musigny. Some articles have already been published with detailed info aout the historic ownership – see the terroir insights below:
