Terroir Insight: Louis Latour – Corton Clos de la Vigne au Saint

One could say it would be impolite to write about the Corton vineyard without mentioning Louis Latour, its largest owner by far.

Louis Latour owns 26.59 ha – equivalent to almost 17% of the Corton hill. This is impressive and interesting seen from a vineyard perspective.

I taste Louis Latour wines from time to time, and I follow this estate like I follow all the others in its category – large negociant/producers.

Some may say my ratings of its wines are harsh, but I repeat: My job is to recommend wines. Hence some wines are tasted, yet not recommended when they do not meet my expectations. And despite what some may think, I do not enjoy giving bad ratings and making critical remarks.

The Louis Latour plot of Corton La Vigne au Saint

Louis Latour has an impressive collection of Corton vines covering a large part of the hill. Some of its cuvées are blends of different climats. Others, like La Vigne au Saint, are from one vineyard – the Clos de la Vigne au Saint, as the Latour plot is named.

There are, as mentioned in previous articles, three producers in this vineyard: Meo-Camuzet, Domaine des Croix, and Louis Latour.

Its Clos de la Vigne au Saint is the largest and most well-known cuvée made from this small vineyard.

The Vigne au Saint terroir is only 2.46 ha, and Louis Latour owns two plots (cadastre nos. 50 and 51) totalling 1.9762 ha in the eastern end of the vineyard next to the David Croix’s parcel.
