Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair is one of the rising stars of Burgundy, and after only 10 years one of the top domaines in the region.
We tasted all the 2010 wines from cask at the domaine in July 2011. The tasting showed that Liger-Belair have made excellent wines in 2010, and will no doubt outperform most other producers in this vintage. The wines are just getting better and better as the vineyards improve – well done Louis-Michel!.
Tasting notes
Vosne Romanee 2010
The Vosne Romanee village wine 2010 is a good wine. Not the same minerality as Colombierere and Clos du Chateau, but a fine balance with the nice 2010 acidity. This village wine was first made in 2006, and comes from 10 different plots in Vosne Romanee.
86 – 88p (2011-2022) CASK
Vosne Romanee Colombiere 2010
The Colombiere is a step up from the ordinary village wine, as it continues to improve. Lovely minerality, but not quite able to match Clos du Chateau. This is the best Colombiere from Liger-Belair so far, a very good effort.
88 – 90p (2014 – 2024) CASK
Vosne Romanee Clos du Chateau 2010
The Clos du Chateau 2010 is a lovely wine. Very fine acidity and mineral note, elegant with a very good structure. Classic red burgundy with a wonderful freshness – a fine wine.
91 – 92p (2014 – 2026) CASK
Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Lavieres 2010
The Lavieres is more dense and darker than Clos du Chateau and Colombiere. Not quite able to match the two Vosne village wines. Good to Very Good.
87 – 88p (2014 – 2026) CASK
Vosne Romanee Chaumes 2010
A little more body and weight than the Clos du Chateau, but less minerality. This is a very good to fine wine. Not better than the Clos du Chateau, but the acidity of 2010 really suits the wine.
89 – 91p (2014 – 2024) CASK
Vosne Romanee Les Suchots 2010
Les Suchots is not my favorit wine from Liger-Belair. The 2010 Suchots is quite dark and heavy compared to the other Vosne 1er crus, some minerality and good length – fine to very fine.
90 – 91p (2015 – 2026) CASK
Nuit-Saint-Georges Les Cras 2010
Les Crass 2010 is a very nice effort from Liger-Belair. A focused wine with a wonderful mineral note. Prefer the Vosne Romanee wines, but this is fine or even very fine.
92 – 93p (2015 – 2026) CASK
Vosne Romanee Les Brulees 2010
The Brulees 2010 is a very interesting wine. Liger-Belair only makes one cask from the 0,1157ha and the wine is not sold on the market – unfortunately. Les Brulees offers a wonderful minerality, quite tightly knit and very elegant – 19% whole clusters are used in this wine. Very fine.
92 – 93p (2016 – 2030) CASK
Vosne Romanee Les Petit Monts 2010
The 2010 Les Petit Monts is a fine to very fine effort from Liger-Belair. Very fine minarality, elegant, with a lot of finesse. Lovely wine.
92 – 94p (2016 – 2030) CASK
Vosne Romanee Aux Reignots 2010
Aux Reignots 2010 is darker and more dense than Petit Monts and Brulees. Very fine minerality as usual, a classic Burgundy. Not quite at the same level as the fenomanal 2005, but at least at the same level as the 2008 and 2002 vintage. Very Fine or even Outstanding.
94-95p (2018 – 2035) CASK
Echezeaux 2010
Liger-Belairs Echezeaux is getting better and better as Luis-Michel get the vineyards in shape. Made from old vines in the very good parcels Cruots and Champs Traversin. Truly a grand cru effort with finesse and length. Precise and quite powerful with a wonderful minerality. Outstanding!
94 – 96p (2017 – 2030) CASK
La Romanee 2010
La Romanee 2010 is a huge wine. Balanced with a superb structure. Quite dark and dense at the moment, but shows a lot of finesse and a wonderful minerality. Not quite on the same level as the fantastic 2005 La Romanee from. Exceptional length a truly extraordinary wine.
97 – 98p (2020 – 2040) CASK
Summing up the tasting of the 2010 vintage
The 2010 vintage is very good at Liger-Belair, and Louis-Michel has made the most of the wonderful structure and acidity in the vintage.
It’s still very early, but the 2010 wines have the potential to be very classic, and to surpass the wonderfull 2008 vintage. The structure of the 2010 wines are more harmonious, and will provide a lot of pleasure for the collectors of classic Burgundy.
