The weather forecast is showing alarmingly high temperatures, and the canicule is accelerating the ripeness.
We are now looking at record-breaking speed … or close to … as the previous record was 2020 … where harvest began on August 20th.
Some estates are now telling me that they will start on August 20th … and the weather forecast tells me that the 2020 record will be challenged.
The preparation for the harvest is already in its final phase, as the picking in Côte de Nuits is expected to start around August 25th – some have confirmed this date already. I will start at Domaine Pierre-Olivier Garcia on August 25th …
Down south in Chassagne, one has confirmed August 22nd as a starting time (Theo Dancer). The reds are already pretty advanced in Côte de Beaune, and yesterday evening I heard from one of the top estates in Meursault who now expects to begin the harvest on August 20th … this is on the verge of the record from 2020.
Harvest time … the forecasts
Harvest Côte de Beaune | Harvest Côte de Nuits | |
May 28th | August 20th | August 25th |
June 29th | August 22th | August 25th |
July 27th | August 25th | August 25th |
August 12th | August 22th | August 25th |
August 13th | August 20th | August 25th |
Harvest time … a historic view
It is important to note that harvest in October was seen before Global warming entered the scene. 1978 harvest started October 7th …meaning a finish of the harvest late October – Jancis Robinson – Burgundy picking and flowering dates 1975–2020.
Please note … these records are only indications … as you will often have vignerons harvesting small plots and test plantings earlier … so only indicative records …
Weather and progress
The hot weather seems to get more severe in recent forecasts. The canicule is really getting annoying and could potentially also affect the work planning.
If we are looking at 30+ or even 35+ in the afternoon, it is most likely that we will see very early starts (6 in the morning) and only picking until 13:00 when the temperatures start to be damaging to the grapes picked.
TO REPEAT … really hope that the vignerons have manned up to deal with the global warming conditions – some of the big estates have already increased the number of pickers by 40% – this does make a difference.
