The rain could prove to be a deciding factor for the Reds in 2025. The pinots were suffering with the effects of the heat wave… with a risk to have little and very concentrated juice ….
Then rain came on August 27th – 49 mm in Nuits-Saint-Georges and on August 31st, we had further rain in the late evening – 25-30 mm in Nuits-Saint-Georges.
As allways rain falls are quite uneven in Burgundy … it´s hard to draw very firm conclusions – but these two days could be useful to bear in mind. The rain was, as usual, uneven, and some areas got quite a lot, while others only got a few drops.
– a big harvesting day in Vosne
Yesterday, Comte Liger-Belair harvested La Romanée and Aux Reignots … both very important benchmark wines of the Domaine.
Charles Lachaux of Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux continued with his top wines, Romanée-Saint Vivant and Aux Reignots … harvested just at the right time after the first rain.
To complete the picture of a perfect day, Domaine Leroy harvested the Romanée-Saint Vivant, and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti continued with Echezeaux (upper part).

Further rain … and dilution
The rain on August 31st was quite persistent, and we will see how much dilution it brought.
Rain is never all good or all bad … the yeasts on the grapes are partly removed by the rain, potentially reducing complexity … on the other hand, some dilution of the juices can sometimes be welcomed… nothing is ever simple in Burgundy.
We will see today and the next days whether the rain can be absorbed by the grapes in a good way or if the humid conditions start to take their toll.
Gray roth has been spotted in some appellations … and this should be taken seriously, as this could spoil a lot in the remainder of the harvest.
Harvest time …
| Forecast date | Harvest Côte de Beaune | Harvest Côte de Nuits |
| May 28th | August 20th | August 25th |
| June 29th | August 22th | August 25th |
| July 27th | August 25th | August 25th |
| August 12th | August 22th | August 25th |
| August 13th | August 20th | August 25th |
| August 17th | August 17th | August 27th |
Weather and progress
Temperatures are cooler now, and the weather is quite unstable … with more showers and thunder showers in the next days.
Forecasts are changing every day (several times a day), and looking for a picking window is complex.
Rain is forecasted on many days, making the harvest heavy in muddy shoes or even boots … that’s Burgundy in a nutshell.
Worse is, however, that rot will enter the vineyards and the quality equation … grey rot has been seen in several appellations … and could be a negative factor alongside other fungus.
Ready?
