The Hospices de Beaune Corton Charlotte-Dumay 2014 is slightly closed – like quite many 2014s are starting to be currently. This is a Cuvée made from Corton Les Ranardes and Les Bressandes – total area of the Hospice holdings here are 2.66 ha (63% Renardes) according to Domaine des Hospice de Beaune. It’s said to be one of longest-lived Cuvées of them all, and to be honest it’s quite backward currently – even in the 2014 vintage. The nose offer rather compact darker fruits – nicely detailed dark berries – hints of earthy minerality. On the palate quite weighty and intense fruit … not showing much complexity. It’s lacking the energy and vibrancy found in the top end Cortons – the best from Domaine des Croix and Maison Camille Giroud do offer so much more … at a significantly lower price. Do however give it time and the benefit of the doubt!
