It is still hot and dry although we had rain on Wednesday July 15th and Thursday July 16th – but inn most places not really enough..
In some regions there are still a big risk of blocked ripeness … meaning that the final ripeneing can be delayed like in 2025.
The rain
Finally the rain came … quite ample and not just small showers here and there. It is however difficult to know if the rain is enough to restart the drought blocked vineyards – but clearly it is most likely not enough in all appellations and vineyards.
The following measurements were recorded on Thursday 16th:
36 mm in NSG
33 in Vosne
28 in Chambolle
11,8 in Morey
18 in Gevrey
18,5 in Puligny and around 20 mm in Chassagne
Judged by the commentaries from Thibault Morey (Morey Coffinet), Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, PO (Pierre-Olivier Garcia), Jane Eyre (Jane Eyre wines and Comte Armand), Aurélie Dulau (Ledy Vins) and Allie Mills of William Kelley and Allie Mills herself – this was very much needed, and clearly most likely not enough to satisfy the need of water in most appellations – we need more.

So not quite enough … but significant
As always there is a big variation … some had too little rain others closer to whats needed … but there is little chance that this could reset the development towards the harvest – we idealy need more water.
The sanitary conditions in the vineyards is very good so far, and they can in some places afford to wait for better phenolic ripenes.
It can however be difficult to maintain freshness especiallly in the whites, if the acidity and tension goes down the drain. I hate overripe whites … where the fruit has got this yellow note and the acidity has gone flat without tension and energy. This is why I from time to time prefer a nice Vinho Verde.

The rain was needed and a good start … but we need more … the lack in phenolic ripeness has given a uncertainty regarding the timing of the harvest.

The advantage of human-scale winegrowing like ours is, of course, the ability to stay close to the reality of the situation and avoid making decisions too early. That is why, for the moment, We are waiting for rain rather than the harvest.
(Probably between August 20 and September 5.)
But for the moment, a harvest that is sanitary perfect.
