For me, being close to the wines, the vignerons and the social life in Burgundy is a big part of covering and living Burgundy. Having domaines and vignerons as close neighbours is a treat and an invaluable help as a wine journalist.
As an example … I Iast week had a fine tasting with my neighbour Odilon Marchand of Marcand-Tawse. As I often do, I bumped into Odilon in rue Julie Godemet here in the very core of Nuits-Saint-Georges … in my world, the centre of Burgundy at large.

I follow the work at Marchand-Tawse every day during the year, and we exchange comments and information all the time … the perfect neighbour for a wine journalist. Pascal Marchand is one of the most experienced and competent winemakers in Burgundy, and he is normally one of my key souces.
Odilon, his son, is also a clever chap, and he is gradually getting into things at Marchand-Tawse … always a pleasure to talk and taste with these guys.
It is pretty unique to have a big vigneron in the neighbourhood where you can follow most of Burgundy, not only the area around Nuits-Saint-Georges.
It is always a big help to be able to taste the new vintages early on. The 2025s are only two months old and I have already tasted the wines several times (not only at Marchand Tawse) and am therefore starting to appreciate some of the characteristics and qualities of the vintage.
