Nicolas Morin is a good wine producer, but also a somewhat untraditional vigneron. He works with very little sulphur… not that this is very untraditional these days … but it becomes more unconventional … as he has some quite rare …. or should I say unconventional terroirs in the very, very northern part of Burgundy.

These unusual terroirs are in Mâlain – 3ha in total – located East of Chenôve and Dijon, and in a part of Côte d´Or. Technically, it is a part of Bourgogne … although it is quite far even from the Dijon appellations.
Nicolas Morin has three hectares in Mâlain … almost all of his own vineyards. The rest are negociant grapes … some made most years, others more randomly.
The typical vineyards of Nicolas Morin
Maison Nicolas Morin produces a small portfolio of roughly twelve to fifteen red and white cuvées:
The top Whites are the Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru “Les Terres Blanches” and the Meursault “Les Peutes Vignes”. He also vinifies fresh, energetic everyday bottles like the Bourgogne Aligoté “Les Chaillots”.
The top reds are in some years, Pernand Les Belles Filles and Nuits-Saint-Georges “Les Longecourts” – other Negociant terroirs.
From his 3-hectare expansion in Mâlain, he produces estate wines under the “Les Écrivains” parcel banner, notably a 100% Pinot Noir Monopole, a Chardonnay and a rare Pinot Beurot.
So a very diverse and complex portfolio … with names you rarely if ever meet.
To be honest, the use of all the names around Ecrivains does not really explain the product that well … the wines are good, but tell me what I am drinking. No one knows Mâlain- sorry- or Écrivains, for that matter.
The wines tasted!
Nicolas Morin Le Mâlain Monopole 2025 the standard cuvee from Mâlain – robust and intense. Quite fresh and intense in 2025 ,,, hmmm … singing not really.
(Drink From 2026) – Very Good – (89p)
Nicolas Morin En la Grande Verde Monopole 2025 … more limestone soil … fresher and more vivid… it does appeal more to me … even a smile … The name makes me breathless … but wtf …
(Drink From 2026) – Very Good – (87p) – ![]()
Nicolas Morin NSG Les Chaillots Pinot Noir 2025 … a delightful glass …. good airiness. Basic NSG from the wrong side of the road … works for me if it’s not extracted too much. Quite some oak … 20% whole cluster.
(Drink From 2026) – Very Good – (87p) – ![]()
