One of the best wines produced from Charmes-Chambertin is in my view is the tremendous Charmes-Chambertin Tres Vieilles Vignes from Domaine Joseph Roty.
While Domaine Joseph Roty is very discrete presumably avoiding publicity, they do however make strong statements with their wines. They have consistently produced great wines over the last decades.
I have had the pleasure of visiting the estate back in the days (before I was a wine journalist) – and have found the wines distinct and of very high quality – and especially the three rare Grand Crus – Mazis, Griotte and Charmes – are of top end quality.
The Charmes-Chambertin Tres Vieilles Vignes – is certainly worth a closer look … on my tour through the plots of this large and diverse Grand Cru.
Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyéres-Chambertin
Charmes-Chambertin include two main sections, one called Aux Charmes (12.24 ha), located below Chambertin and the Route des Grands Crus and south of Griottes-Chambertin.
The other part Mazoyères ou Charmes (18.59 ha) – located south of Aux Charmes and below Latricieres Chambertin and Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes. The Mazoyères section stretches from Route des Grands Crus and in some places all the way down to RN974. The wines from the Mazoyères section can be sold as both Mazoyères-Chambertin and Charmes-Chambertin.
