Domaine Henri Gouges is a famous and well known estate, but Gouges has somehow been overlooked by me .. and while I from time to time have tasted the wines … I never got around to visit.
Domaine Henri Gouges – Antoine Gouges – February 2019
This trip was however different, as we had the pleasure of meeting Antoine Gouges in Nuits-Saint-Georges – and with no further ado a visit the following day was arranged to taste the Gouges 2017s.
Domaine Henri Gouges today .. 2019
I have as I mentioned followed the wines of Domaine Henri Gouges over the years – think the 1996 vintage was amongst the first I tasted.
Back in the 1990s the wines were rather backward and needed years if not decades to unfold – and while there were little doubt about the inherent quality of the wines .. the Gouges wines sort of became a bit overlooked.
Our tasting at Domaine Henri Gouges did however reveal, that changes has been implemented at Gouges – and it seems like the style is now more forward, I do find the same qualities today.
The wines has a regal quality that few wines from Nuits-Saint-Georges posses – they are elegant and refined, yet still with a fine Nuits-Saint-Georges influence, but somehow without the very masculine minerality known from many other wines from the appellation.
I must say that I was rather impressed by the 2017s .. and will definitely follow these wines in the future .. this is good stuff.
A Regal quality …
Above I mentioned the Gouges style as regal … and I do feel that the wines here has this dignified, refined and elegant style.
Gouges is clearly Nuits-Saint-Georges, yet it’s NSG with a quite exceptional elegance – a bit discrete and calmly tempered – these wines offer true class.
