Visit Domaine Robert Sirugue – tasting of the 2017 vintage

Finally a return to Domaine Robert Sirugue in Vosne-Romanee to taste a new vintage from this fine but still slightly overlooked estate.

I was at Sirugue almost 4 years ago to taste the 2013s – so quite some time to say the least, and I was therefore really looking forward to taste the Sirugue wines again.

The tasting was held by Arnaud Sirugue this time, who also presented his own wine from the new estate Arnaud et Sophie – more about this estate in a separate article.

The Sirigue estate briefley

The Sirugue estate is what I would call slightly low-key, but they are getting a stronger and stronger market penetration.

The reason is pretty obvious as they produce good quality Vosne wines year after year .. the production is additionally fairly large giving the importers something to work with.

The quality is surprisingly high and the wines are both delicious and lovely – not always to be expected in Vosne-Romanée.

I genuinely like the Sirugue wines – and that is indeed a good start. Furthermore Sirugue have very good vineyards – and the Vosne village, the Vosne Petit Monts and the Grands Echezeaux are all classic in my view.

Tasting notes from my tasting on June 5th, 2018

The 2017 from Domaine Robert Sirugue are showing well – well balanced, very good fruit and energy – the wines are vivacious and lovely.

The main quality is drinkability and hedonistic pleasure … not to make it complex – they just seem to drink well the 2017s – a great quality seen from my glass at least.

Domaine Robert Sirugue, Bourgogne Rouge 2017

The Bourgogne Rouge from Sirugue is a good entry level Burgundy. The nose offer fresh and rather vivid fruit even with a small hint of terroir. On the palate fine fruit – pure and light footed – medium weight – a wine for pleasure drinking.

Domaine Robert Sirugue, Ladoix Buisson 2017

The Ladoix is at step up in intensity and concentration. Lovely juicyness and intensity for this level. Fruit is fresh and airy – offering good drinking and pleasure. Really like the style of the Ladoix cuvee – with the rather prominent mineral notes.

Domaine Robert Sirugue, Chambolle Les Mombies 2017

The Chambolle-Musigny Les Mombies is located near the road – and below Chambolle-Musigny village. Classic Chambolle yet also Vosne style .. with the oak impression. 25 – 30% whole cluster .. so relatively expressive in the bouquet. On the palate vibrant and forward – medium weight – showing a lovely fruit. Lovely fruity character.

Domaine Robert Sirugue, Vosne Romanee 2017

The regular Vosne Romanee Village is a blend of several different village terroirs. The cuvee from the southern part of Vosne (Aux Reas and La Croix Blanche) is rich and rather opulent – fresh and fruity and very much into the vintage. The cuvee from the northern end – Les Chalandins – is more vivid and forward – adding some more tension and drive to the wine. A blend of the two will no doubt offer lovely drinkability.

Domaine Sirugue, Vosne-Romanee Vieilles Vignes 2017

The Vosne-Romanee Vieilles Vignes is a step up in quality and concentration – as usual. It’s made from a village plot on the Flagey side of Vosne just south of the Clos de Vougeot wall – in the climate Les Violettes. In the bouquet vivid and rather expressive fruit with a lovely filigree minerality. On the palate medium depth – with a more deptht and juicy fruit than the regular village.
