A hedonistic treat is what I am constantly looking for. Not points, not weight, not density, but zen-like balance, refinement, and sheer joy.
For me, there are few wines that offer this – along with generosity and effortlessness -as consistently as La Romanee from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair.
On my July Burgundy trip I had the opportunity to re-taste the 2008 La Romanée – a bottle opened at lunch and enjoyed with good friends in Meuilley in the evening.
What a treat! Many thanks😊
The 2008 La Romanée is now quite developed, with secondary and the beginnings of tertiary aromas. It has matured a bit since I last tasted it from magnum in November 2015 – from the same cellar as this example.
Almost five years down the road, it has developed relatively slowly – yet the tertiary notes are getting a bit more evident. It´s quite structured and driven by acidity, which adds to the floral experience. The bouquet offers juicy, organic, red fruit, enhanced by a bouquet of Vosne spices and flowers: violets, peony, rose, cinnamon, and allspice. On the palate, the fruit is juicy and vivid with nice mid-palate weight for the vintage. This was perhaps a snip fuller from magnum, but there is still great potential in this wine. A treat now, but I anticipate drinking over the next five years will bring the maximum in hedonistic joy.
