I visited Domaine Sirugue for the first time back in 2014, and while the wines were showing well then, I think it’s fair to say the quality has improved significantly in subsequent years.
Sirugue has gained both intensity and fruit definition over the years; yields are now more fitting, and the use of new oak has been reduced. This has given the wines a more transparent, lively feel.
The wines are made by Arnaud Sirugue and his father Jean-Louis, whose sister, Marie-France Sirugue, runs the marketing side of the estate.
Arnaud Sirugue also makes wine with his wife, Sophie Noellat, in the setting of Arnaud et Sophie. There he has the chance to set his own stylistic mark on the wines and differentiate himself from the family domaine. But more about that in a separate article.
The Sirugue tasting on October 26
The 2020s are a fine match for the Sirugue style. It’s a vintage with excellent concentration and nice freshness. This gives the Sirugue wines a nice lightening effect, and the reduced use of oak allows for more energy and tension.
Let’s taste!
Domaine Robert Sirugue Aligoté 2020
The aligoté has fine fruit and good acidity. It’s a crisp wine with nice density and intensity. The grapes come from the area below the Clos de Vougeot and from Gilly-lès-Cîteaux. A rather classical aligoté; the white 2020s are really showing their class.
(Drink from 2022) – Good (85-87p) – Tasted 26/10/2021
Domaine Robert Sirugue Bourgogne Passetoutgrains Rosé 2020
The Bourgogne Passetoutgrains Rosé is made in Gilly-lès-Cîteaux, and is pure and vivid with a fresh, clean mid-palate. Cooler than in previous vintages, this is showing lovely elegance and fragile pink roses; this is delightfully enjoyable. Bottled as both Arnaud et Sophie and as Domaine Sirugue. Some like this (I do), others not so much.
(Drink from 2022) – Good+ (87-89p) – Tasted 26/10/2021
Domaine Robert Sirugue Bourgogne Passetoutgrains 2020
The red Passetoutgrains also comes from Gilly, and is clear and pure. Quite forward, and with delicate fruit, this is a vin de soif, with almost no impression of oak. It’s juicy, with the cool feel of the 2020 vintage.
(Drink from 2022) – Good (85-87p) – Tasted 26/10/2021
Domaine Robert Sirugue Bourgogne Rouge 2020
The Bourgogne Rouge is showing well; it’s deep, intense, and lively. This is vivid, with a slightly sweet, charmingly perfumed note. The lesser 2020s have lovely, lively freshness – a vin de soif.
(Drink from 2022) – Good (86-87p) – Tasted 26/10/2021
Domaine Robert Sirugue Ladoix-Serrigny Buisson 2020
The Ladoix is a bit oakier, with a heavier toast. I would prefer a lighter wood treatment, as the oak does take over from the fine, cooler fruit. We’ll see how well the oak integrates; I had the same complaint in 2018. Maybe it’s a generational thing.
(Drink from 2022) – Good (85-86p) – Tasted 26/10/2021
Domaine Robert Sirugue Chambolle-Musigny Les Mombies 2020
The Chambolle Les Mombies is located near the RD 974 below the village. The 40-50% whole-cluster inclusion gives this wine an expressive, extroverted character. The 30% new oak is now well integrated; much better than in previous years.
(Drink from 2029) – Very Good (88-89p) – Tasted 26/10/2021
Domaine Robert Sirugue Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Herbues 2020
There is only a feuillette (half-barrel) of this wine, and it was picked by the people at the sorting table. It is very lively, with good concentration, and the oak is well integrated given the fact that it’s 100% new. The other 100% – whole clusters – make this in principle more like the Nicolas Faure version than the Domaine Garcia version, but the new oak changes the picture quite a bit, making the wine firmer and more structured. An interesting wine, it shows that whole cluster works well in Les Herbues – it’s got soul.
(Drink from 2030) – Very Good (89p) – Tasted 26/10/2021 –
