Domaine Ponsot, Griotte Chambertin 1998

The 1998 Griotte Chambertin from Ponsot is delightfully transparent and juicy for the vintage. The nose is fresh and open, with variations of red fruit – fully reflecting the charming name of the vineyard (if one goes with the cherries interpretation of the name). On the palate juicy red fruit – medium weight – and lacking the depth of the Clos de la Roche and the length of the Chapelle-Chambertin. It does however offer a lovely drinkability and for that I prefere it to Chapelle. It’s a lovely 1998 – especially the transparancy is worth mentioning.
