Read the the impressions and tasting notes after malo – here
During my recent visit to Burgundy I had the opportunity to visit Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé. to taste the 2015 vintage from cask.
It’s always very great and interesting to visit Jean-Luc Pepin and Francois Millet at Domaine Vogüé, and this visit was no exception – some truly delightful wines.
I know the Vogüé wines very well and they have been amongst my benchmark wines for 15 years .. i.e. the wines I like to taste every year to evaluate the quality and style of the vintage. In some vintages I taste them both before and after the malolactic fermentation and then normally also from bottle when they are released.
This year I had the opportunity to taste the wines as they were just beginning the malolactic fermentation.
The malic acid is however very very low in the 2015 vintage (30 – 40% of the normal level), and while its before the malolactic fermentation the wines are therefore unusually approachable.
The 2015s from Vogüé … initial impressions
The 2015 vintage is a generous vintage with abundant fruit and a charming character .. it’s a bit like a perfectly cool and clear summer day .. a sense of decadent expressive richness .. but still fresh and transparent.
The fruit of the 2015 vintage can be very juicy, generous and balanced – in my view the perfect match for the big mineral driven terroirs of Chambolle. A vintage like this also suits the regal Vogüé style .. as it ads some lush generosity to the wines. So expectations were very high .. and I was not disappointed.
A word of warning though … It’s still early so very preliminary notes on the Vogüé wines. Also .. don’t forget the 2014s from Vogüé that will be released later this year – delightful classic and transparent wines.
To rate or not to rate!
It’s sometimes hard to taste the wines before the malolactic fermentation, thus also difficult to rate the wines precisely at this stage – although the amount of malic acid is unusually low in the 2015 vintage.
The style found in the Vogüé 2015 wines were however consistent with the impressions from other domaines tasted in March and June 2016. It is nevertheless early to make formal ratings of the wines … but I gave it a shot based on my quite extensive experience with the magnificent Vogüé wines.
Notes from tasting June 12th 2016
All the wines were as mentioned tasted from cask, the wines was just beginning the malolactic fermentation but quite approachable nevertheless.
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, Chambolle Musigny 2015
The Chambolle village is a beauty in the making. The nose is somewhat closed due to the malo … but the rich fruit notes is lurking underneath as is the minerality. On the palate lovely fruit .. very generous midpalate of ripe and fresh fruit – intense, transparent and beautifully balanced even at this stage. A big village in the making .. will no doubt be a charmer given sufficient cellaring.
Fine (91 – 93p) – from CASK before malolactic fermentation

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, Chambolle Musigny 1er cru 2015
The Chambolle 1er cru – made from the young wines on Grand Cru Musigny – it was more closed than the village due to a slight reduction. In the bouquet richer and sweeter notes of strawberries, raspberries with hints of blueberries, pomegranate and redcurrant. The minerality is more forward in the wine, and again we find this wonderful delicate coulis fruit aromas – so fresh and vibrant. On the palate more weight with layers of red fruit, and a fine backbone from the mighty Musigny terroir. This will be very exiting to follow.
Very Fine (93 – 94p) – from CASK before malolactic fermentation

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, Chambolle Les Amoureuses 2015
The Chambolle Musigny Les Amoureuses is a gorgeous wine in the making. Despite the malo the bouquet offer lovely red and darker berries – blackcurrant, blackberry and redcurrant – spiced with peony rose and a vibrant minerality. On the palate long intense and focused with a rich an generous mid-palate fruit. A beautiful Les Amoureuses in the making ..
Outstanding (94 – 96p) – from CASK before malolactic fermentation

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, Bonnes Mares 2015
The Bonnes Mares is a beauty offering a lot of layered fruit and charm already at this stage – this is a fine vintage for Bonnes Mares it seems. In the nose generous red and darker fruits – blackberries, pomegranate, boysenberries and red currant – spiced with a forward expression of earthy minerality – quite expressive and floral for a red soil Bonnes Mares. On the palate layers of deep and rich fruit .. very pure, zappy and fresh .. with a outstanding focus and refinement. In my view one of the best Bonnes Mares I have tasted so far from Vogüé … so perhaps a masterpiece in the making.
Outstanding – (95 – 96p) – from CASK before malolactic fermentation

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, Musigny 2015
The Musigny 2015 is a mighty wine .. In the nose red and dark fruit .. blueberries, pomegranate and red currant brought forward by a very intense minerality. On the palate very long, intense and balanced .. the mid-palate fruit is exubarant, zappy and very juicy … but still tremendously focused by the very intense and powerful minerality of the Musigny terroir. The birth of a great Musigny! Will need to taste this malo and bottling .. but it seems like this wine has all the components to merit an Extraordinary rating.
Extraordinary – (97 – 98p) – from CASK before malolactic fermentation
