I’m back at Domaine Cathiard after missing the 2017s last winter. And YES, it is good to be back.
Cathiard has certainly taken its place in the Vosne hierarchy as a regular, dependable producer of hedonistic and very enjoyable wines. These are great wines.
So let’s get thrilled …

Impression and notes from tasting the 2018s
The 2018s from Cathiard continue the tendency of ever more detailed and transparent wines with less oak and a more pure, racy fruit expression. Even in an intense and generous vintage like 2018, Sebastien Cathiard has found refinement and airiness.
The 2018s are rich and velvety with true generosity, but they maintain the refined, detailed expression found in previous years.
As with all other 2018s, the wines reveal that this is indeed a generous year. But this characteristic has expressed itself differently chez Cathiard: some wines carry the generosity with greater ease and delicacy.
The best wines offer lovely, juicy freshness to balance the generous fruit. They are vibrant and charming with delightful tension between velvety fruit and some fresher, red notes of pomegranate and redcurrant.
Domaine Cathiard Côteaux Bourguignon 2018
The Côteaux Bourguignon is vivid and on the generous side – rather dense, but with good energy. Around 40% gamay is beautifully revealed in this wine – gamay provides fine vivacity in years like 2018. It is indeed different, yet very much Cathiard. Truly an enjoyable glass with its expressive fruitiness.
(Drink from 2020) – Good (85 – 87p) – Tasted 12/11/2019 – Cask – ?

Domaine Cathiard Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2018
Next up the Bourgogne Pinot Noir, a lovely generic – but generous – Burgundy. The 2018 edition is rather full-bodied for this level, with quite a vinous character. The bouquet offers juicy red and dark berry fruit with a hint of earthy minerality. On the palate, generous fruit – fine freshness for the vintage – with excellent depth and length for a Bourgogne Rouge. Better than the Côteaux Bourguignon, but perhaps less vivacious.
