The Aux Reignots is in my view one of the most interesting 1er crus of Cote de Nuits – its perhaps not quite in the same popularity league as Vosne-Romanee Cros Parantoux, Aux Malconsorts or Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses, but the focus on this terroir has increased dramatically during the last 10 to 15 years.
Louis-Michel Liger-Belair controls 45% of the Aux Reignots vineyard, that extends just above his prestigious monopole La Romanee – and his quest for quality has really pushed the perception of Aux Reignots in the minds of the Burgundy collectors.
Aux Reignot was in my view a slightly overlooked terroir until Louis-Michel put it back on the map .. so lets take a closer look at this exiting 1er cru.
Aux Reignots at the top of La Romanee
Aux Reignots is located just above La Romanee between Les Petits Monts to the north and Champs Perdrix to the south – see map below.
The vineyard is 1.62 ha – split in 20 plots and there are currently 10 owners on the vineyard.
Vosne-Romanee Aux Reignots in a historic perspective
The history of Aux Reignots is not very well documented … and one word seems to fit both the documentation and the early ownership structure … fragmented!
On the 1827 cadaste map of Aux Reignots we see a very large number of small plots especially along the northern side of the vineyard – see below.
