There are many very fine and even outstanding wines in the 2016 vintage. The variation in quality and style is however quite large – and not all wines are great.

While I try to be consistent in the ratings – the list reveals some surprises and question marks. Perhaps I have been too generous when I tasted and rated these wines – perhaps – but when I taste a wine that shows very well, I do need to reward the wine with a suitable rating reflecting this.

I was surprised myself by the Domaine Faiveley Corton de Cortons 2016 – but tasted after the Musigny it showed very well indeed – and why shouldn’t a Corton not be able to get 97p? There is a first time for every thing.

There are a few other surprises … it shows that Burgundy is still about looking for the new names and the gems in each vintage.

I have seen some ratings of the vintage, that show a large number of wines receiving very high scores indeed … and while this is lovely for the producers – it’s hardly realistic that lesser producers and or terroirs of less that top standing would or should receive such ratings.
