Domaine Georges Glantenay is the second of two well-known Glantenay estates in Volnay, the other being Bernard and Thierry Glantenay, whom I visited in July 2019.
Domaine Georges Glantenay is located quite high in the village, but also has a more visible shop in the very centre of Volnay just below the church.
Domaine Georges Glantenay is a sister-and-brother joint venture, with Sarah in charge of sales and brother Guillaume in charge of viticulture and winemaking.
I tasted the Georges Glantenay wines first in late 2018, and since then I have tried to find an opportunity to experience the wines from cask and meet the people behind these rather delightful drops.
The man behind the wine – Guillaume Glantenay
I find the Glantenay wines very exciting, although they perhaps not are the most intense and concentrated wines in Volnay. Nonetheless, they have a special hedonistic and enjoyable side that is quite rare in Volnay.
A bit of history
Domaine Georges Glantenay originates from the Pierre Glantenay estate, founded in 1893. After Pierre, his son Georges and then his grandson Pierre, the fourth generation now heads the estate, in the form of Guillaume and Sarah.
Guillaume’s wines have a lovely lightness, from moderate extraction. Hence the wines have a lively note, rarely displaying excessive alcohol and instead gracing the palate with vivid fruit and a good hedonistic profile.
And so, to the range!
