On my trip to Burgundy in November I had the pleasure of visiting Domaine Moron-Garcia in Nuits-Saint-Georges – to taste some 2017s and 2018s (quick samples).
I had only tasted Domaine Moron-Garcia once before, so this is a new estate – at least to me.
Wine and people
Domaine Moron-Garcia is managed by Matthieu Moron and Pierre-Oliver Garcia who are making wines in a rather modest size cellar in Nuits-Saint-Georges. First vintage for the estate was 2016 ..
This is not the every day operation, as some of the wines are made in a time-consuming but also quality oriented way … that best can be described as on the border between crazy or a extreme focus on quality and detail.
Always great to see young people trying new techniques or old methods for that matter ..
Cuvée Baie par Baie
Matthieu Moron and Pierre-Oliver Garcia employ a special technique where some of the berries in the top end wines are “hand destemmed” – berry by berry – to ensure whole berries for the vinification. This is extremely time consuming … they must have a lot of good friends .. and a special dedication.
The “Baie par Baie” grapes are then to a certain degree mixed with whole cluster grapes, and in some cases more regular destemmed berries.
The Baie par Baie method is what I would call unusual, and very time consuming – however the wines served here are of a both high and exiting quality.
The 2017 wines from Moron-Garcia
At our short visit we tasted a lineup of the 2017 from tank and finished of with a tasting of the 2018s in the cellar. All in all a lovely impression of the estate … definitely a place to visit and wines to taste.
Starting out with the Domaine Moron-Garcia, Aligote 2017 a vivid and aromatic Aligote – 80 – 100 year old vines. Lovely depth and intensity and with a lovely balancing acidity – Aligote from old wines do have something special to offer.
(Drink from 2019) – Good (87 – 88p) – Tasted 14/11/2018

The Domaine Moron-Garcia, Brouilly La Folie down south in Beaujolais – Gamey and 10% whole cluster as far as I recall. A lovely balance and vivid energy, this is drinking very well, with the purity and fruitiness that is the hallmark of the Moron-Garcia estate. Lovely freshness.
(Drink from 2019) – Good (86 – 87p) – Tasted 14/11/2018

The Domaine Moron-Garcia, Bourgogne NSG La Maladieres 2017, fresh and vivid with a iron minerality – rather typical for the appellation. Lovely fruit with variation of cherries … elegant for this level.
(Drink from 2019) – Good (86 – 87p) – Tasted 14/11/2018

The Domaine Moron-Garcia, Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Charmois 2017 is one of the special cuvées. 10% whole cluster 40% destemmed and 50% “Baie par Baie”. Tremendous depth and purity of the fruit – classic NSG, yet I do think that the Moron-Garcia find that extra sparkle in the fruit – that I find unusual at this level. Lovely presentation of the charming fruit of the vintage.
(Drink from 2025) – Very Good (88 – 89p) – Tasted 14/11/2018

Moving north of NSG to the border of Vosne-Romanee – Domaine Moron-Garcia, Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Herbues. This is a different wine – new oak – and a lovely vivid fruit. A bit difficult to taste at the moment – but the lovely generosity of the north side fruit is definitely showing. Better than Charmois – perhaps?!
(Drink from 2027) – Very Good (88 – 89p) – Tasted 14/11/2018

Moving on to Beaune – Domaine Moron-Garcia, Beaune Les Tuvillains 2017 rich and earthy with a lovely fruitiness – 50% whole cluster does indeed help. It’s long and quite intense for the vintage, still maintaining the lightness of 2017. Lovely juice!
(Drink from 2027) – Very Good (90 – 91p) – Tasted 14/11/2018

The Corton is the top cuvée using the Baie par Baie “technique”. Domaine Moron-Garcia, Corton “Cuvée Baie par Baie” 2017 – here we have 40% Baie par Baie, 50% whole cluster and 10% destemmed. It’s floral, energetic and intense – it’s long and have a silky expression. The acidity is giving a good balance – this is a elegant wine.
(Drink from 2030) – Very Fine (93p) – Tasted 14/11/2018
Domaine Moron-Garcia .. exciting with an edge
I find the wines of Moron-Garcia very exciting – offering high quality – and with distinct style.
These are wines to look for and try, as they will definitely offer new dimensions to your Burgundy experience – one of the finds of 2018/19.
