Burgundy is about sorting and picking the right producers and the best wines. It is always a balance as top-end producers often make both very good wines and some less interesting wines to say it bluntly.

Many producers expand their collections, and often, with vineyards that are of lower quality. This will show when compared with the top vineyards from the original vineyard holdings of the estate.
If the best of the best bottles are not necessary, I can confidently say that you will find what you’re looking for. If you just want the feel of the producer’s style and feel the Pinot flowing, then it will make you happy. But if you want the full package with terroir and emotional satisfaction, theb you need to explore deeper into the core of the lineup … this where you find the true vin d`émotion.
Not all vineyards can produce great wines due to the terroir, but also, the wrong clone and cépage can prevent even the best terroir from producing a truly great wine.
Terroir and cépage bring great cuvées
In Burgundy, terroir is in focus, as it sets the scene. But almost as equally important are the vines … the cépage and age of the vines. The word “cépage” encompasses the variety of the vines, i.e., rootstock and the variety of the Pinot Noir used … the clone or the massal selection.
The cépage planted is extremely important, as this defines the terroir and sets the style and potential quality of the wines.
