November tradition – tasting with Sebastien Cathiard at Domaine Cathiard in Vosne-Romanée… this year vintage 2023.

Sebastien is showing his full lineup at this tasting – a treat with many fine highlights … this is truly fabulous Burgundies.

The ’23s from Domaine Cathiard

Cathiard has nailed the 2023 … the ripeness is on the lively and fresh side with the yield judged perfectly – i.e. very little if any green harvest. The style is forward with an open and expressive fruit …. wine for enjoyment.

Domaine Cathiard Aligote 2023

Domaine Cathiard has within three vintages staked its claim amongst the top end aligote producers. Its 2023 is more generous and exotic than the vivid, mineral ’21, but more vivid and crystalline than the ’22. As I have said before this is a white Cathiard, with all the qualities and strengths that the reds have demonstrated since Sebastien took over. It`s vivid with a lovely hedonistic note. Bottled April 2024.

Domaine Cathiard Côteaux Bourguignon 2023

The Côteaux Bourguignon is a typical 2023 … vivid, and light-footed, with an energetic stance. It has a touch of the fruity generosity that all Cathiard wines have. 30% Gamay and vines planted in 1980 giving a slightly rich note. A lovely vin de soif.

Domaine Cathiard Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2023

The Bourgogne Pinot Noir is deeper and more intense but maintains the fresh 2023 stance. Cooler and more lively than the 2022. This has the Cathiard character, and while it is bigger than the Coteaux Bourguignon, this a vivid wine for a summer evening. 30% new oak does give it intensity to balance even a barbecue evening.

Domaine Cathiard Hautes Côtes de Nuits Village 2023

The latest addition to Cathiard’s Hautes Côtes de Nuits empire, these vines in Villers-la-Faye were acquired in 2021. The entry-level wine has a fairly lively expression with the effortless 2023 coolness. Has good hedonistic qualities and a lovely energy.

Domaine Cathiard Hautes Côtes de Nuits Village Aux Chaumes 2023

The Hautes Côtes de Nuits Aux Chaumes comes from a 1.35-hectare vineyard, another recent expansion of the estate. The parcel has a high limestone content, with clay and stones. Not as mineral-driven as the Dames Huguettes. This has a fine structure and vivid acidity. Is more serious and needs more time to unfold.

Domaine Cathiard Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Les Dames Huguettes 2023

Les Dames Huguettes comes from a vineyard with high limestone content and thin soil. This is a mineral terroir. Les Dames Huguettes has a significantly more defined and refined expression than the other wines in the Hautes Côtes line-up. This is a wine with great structure and energy … the very best terroir in the Hautes Côtes.

Domaine Cathiard Gevrey-Chambertin 2023

The Gevrey-Chambertin is a delicious sip from the Gevrey appellation. It’s a Gevrey but with a Vosne hint: charming, and in this context, vivid and lively. A nice and effortless wine … struggling a bit after Les Dames Huguettes. This has a nice forwardness and is really enjoyable.

Domaine Cathiard Nuits-Saint-Georges 2023

The Nuits-Saint-Georges village, mainly from the climate Aux Athés, is a truly delightful wine in 2032. It has a charming silky feel – this is such a lovely terroir with the 80-year-old vines. 30% new oak gives it a lovely balance. Lovely cool fruit of the vintage – gorgeous hedonistic joy.

Domaine Cathiard Vosne-Romanée 2023

The Vosne-Romanée is one of my benchmark wines. This is, as always, generous and vivid, with a delicate, tense expression. The Cathiard village comes from six different lieux-dits, and offers a lovely Vosne spiciness. Is Very vivid and fresh… quite intense but also very elegant.
