I was doing a education session about Pommard with a private client, and he opened the the Pommard Epenots 2010 from Lucien Le Moine to accompany our talk about the Pommard and Volnay appellations – see more about the Winehog Education Sessions here. This wine is a perfect illustration of how austere and old school a Pommard can be – luckily some Pommards are more playful and enjoyable …
The 2010 Epenots is currently a brutal wine – still very tannic and backward with the intense fruit sleeping behind the firm structure of tannins and minerality. The nose offer dark fruit, plenty of structural information wheras the more charming fruit notes are held in the background. The palate is dominated by tannins and minerality – making it almost painful to enjoy currently. After some time in the glass the fruit expands and the tannins become more mellow. This is a wine that will need – I fear 20 years more in the cellar – to unfold fully – and somehow I believe it will acturally be even Very Fine when it does.
(Drink from 2035) – Very Fine – (92 – 93p) – Tasted 04/07/2017.

- Dilution and high yieldsThe first 2023 wines are now in bottle, and it is time to reflect a bit about the high yields as this shapes the vintage so to speak. 2023 is a quite unique vintage with exceptionally high yields which we have not seen since 1982; there were sometimes giant bunches of grapes weighing 300 grams, double ...
- The 2023s, phenolic ripeness and dilution?I am currently tasting a lot of 2023s … mostly to my pleasure, but to be honest, I am a bit worried about some with signs of dilution, lack of energy, and freshness. As we all know by now, 2023 yields were (in some cases) enormous – sometimes more than 100 hl/ha. Although this amount of ...

- Visit to Domaine Dujac – Tasting the 2023sLast year, Domaine Dujac held a series of larger tastings during which journalists had the opportunity to taste the 2022s. As a side note: I have followed Dujac’s wines ...
