One of the annual wine highlights is the October tasting of the new vintage from Domaine Comte Georges de Vogué. This year was no exception, and the expectations were very high, as the 2010 vintage is one of my favorite vintages in Burgundy – and I was not disappointed.
As usual the wines were introduced by Jean-Luc Pepin from Comte de Vogué – starting out with a thorough vintage report for the 2010 vintage. It’s always a pleasure to meet Jean-Luc and hear his view on the vintage and the latest news from the domaine and Burgundy in general.
Normally he presents a very fine and impressive lineup of Vogué wines, but I must say the 2010 wines are really exceptional even by Vogué standards.
The 2010 vintage at Domaine Comte Georges de Vogué
The 2010 wines from Comte de Vogué are truly great wines. All the wines are crystal clear, pure, transparent and refined. The fruit is delicate, intense and the minerality is finely grained and showing every detail of the terroir. They are powerful but still quite light-footed. All the trademarks of the best 2010 red Burgundies.
In my view the 2010 lineup from Vogué is among the very best vintages from this fine Domaine. The 2005 wines might be better in the very long run, but I really think I prefer the crystal clear, transparent and terroir driven style of the 2010 vintage.
Tasing notes from the tasting 06/10/2012
We tasted four wines, the Chambolle Village, the Chambolle 1er cru, the Bonnes Mares and last but not least the Musigny Vieilles Vignes.
Comte de Vogué, Chambolle Musigny 2010
The Chambolle village 2010 is a lovely transparent terroir driven village wine. In the bouquet fresh and crisp red berries – raspberries, cherries with hints of blueberries and red current. On the palate sligtly closed but with a fantastic transparancy and very finely grained minerality. Crystal clear red fruit, lovely balance and acidity. The tannins are very fine but currently quite present in the finish. Is closing down now, and need 10 years in the celler to show the potential. A real beauty … love the crystal clear fruit and transparancy.
Comte de Vogué, Chambolle Musigny 1er cru 2010
The Chambolle Musigny 1er cru 2010 is a truly lovely wine and quite a big step up from the village wine. Made from young wines – below 25 years – in the grand cru Musigny vineyard. In the bouquet lovely cool and crystal clear red fruit – forrest strawberries, raspberries with hints of pomegranate and liquorice. The bouquet is also oozing with finely grained refined minerality. On the palate beautiful red fruit with delicate balance and refined minerality. Very focused and long mineralic finish. The fruit is cool and crystal clear but also quite silky and lush. More open than the village wine, but will most likely close down – and need 10 – 15 years to unfold.
(Drink from 2025) – Very Fine 93p
Comte de Vogué, Bonnes Mares
The 2010 Bonnes Mares is a real beauty and one of Vogué’s very best efforts from this vineyard. In the bouquet a deeper, more complex and somewhat darker aromatic profile than the Chambolle 1er cru. Delicate red fruit and a very impressive minerality for this vineyard – notes of strawberries, blueberries and pomegranate with hints of gooseberries and redcurrant. On the palate refined juicy red fruit, very elegant and light-footed for a Bonnes Mares. The finish is long and lingering with a crisp minerality and acidity. A great Bonnes Mares – Chambolle style!
(Drink from 2027) – Outstanding 95p
Comte de Vogué, Musigny Vieilles Vignes 2010
The Musigny 2010 is a exceptionally beautiful effort. In the bouquet layers of cool fresh and crystal clear red fruit – notes of raspberries, cherries, strawberries and pomegranate with a hint of liquorice. The minerality is finely grained refined and very vibrant in the lovely transparant fruit. On the palate layers of deep cool red fruit, very intense and juicy with a fantastic energy from the impressive minerality. The midpalate concentration with layers of silky fruit and fine tannins is a full level up from the Bonnes Mares – still it’s a very refined and racy wine. The finish is intense and long with a mind-boggling minerality. A truly extraordinary Musigny from Vogué.
(Drink from 2030) – Extraordinay 97p
