During my March 2017 trip to Burgundy I had the opportunity to visit Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé to taste the 2016 vintage from cask.
I know the Vogüé wines very well, and they have been amongst my benchmark wines for 15 years .. i.e. the wines I like to taste every year to evaluate the quality and style of the vintage.
In some vintages I taste them from cask both before and after the malolactic fermentation and then normally also from bottle, when they are released in Denmark. This gives a quite unique chance to follow the wines through their first years of development.
This year I first tasted the wines as some of them were just beginning the malolactic fermentation … on April 30th 2017.
Depressing quantities but magnificent quality at this stage
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé lost almost 70% of the 2016 harvest to the terrible frost on April 27th 2017.
The frost damaged the vineyards in Chambolle very badly – and this included the mighty Musigny vineyard – where Vogüé is the largest owner with 7.12 ha – equivalent to 70% of the full area.
The frost damage is almost unprecedented as the frost normally hit the low areas near the RN974 – and not areas at the top of the slope like Musigny.
With only around 30% of a normal harvest in the cellar the quantities sort of influences the feelings and emotions around the vintage – depressing to see all the empty and unused barrels in the Vogüé cellar – see photo below.
Its therefore encouraging to taste the quality of the 2016s from the casks – tremendous potential here it seems – and perhaps even more importantly a magnificent joie de vivre jumps from the glass – almost defying the very nature that tried so hard to eliminate this vintage on this sad April morning in 2016.
