A summer visit to Domaine Duroché to taste the 2018 vintage was a treat, as this is one of the rising stars of Gevrey-Chambertin.
Pierre Duroché made some tremendous 2015s and 2016s, lovely 2017s, and thus my expectations for the 2018s were high, as a vintage like 2018 should go very well with the Duroché style.
The 2018s from Duroché are a return to the more intense and weighty style of the 2015s and 2016s. Yet I think that the balance of the 2018s is even better, adding freshness to the 2015s and a hedonistic joy to the 2016s, and making for some truly enjoyable wines.
So: to the joyous notes!
Tasting notes from the visit on July 5th, 2019
The Duroché 2018s are simply delightful, with both concentration and freshness. Pierre has avoided the heat in the fruit found in many 2018s, as well as the massive alcohol levels seen in some wines. The Duroché 2018s are between 12% and 13.5% – a good indicator of freshness.
