We have now come to the third and final report on Clément Boillot’s family domaines. He has, as I wrote earlier, taken over his family’s wine portfolio, consisting of three domaines: his own endeavour in Beaujolais; his father’s estate, Domaine Louis Boillot; and Domaine Ghislaine Barthod from his mother.
In this article I cover Domaine Louis Boillot, a new estate for me. His father’s domaine originates from Volnay, Pommard – and Gevrey-Chambertin.
There are big changes on the ground at these estates, although not necessarily in style. Still, quite the transformation for Clément, whose early experience was in the Beaujolais part of the business.
Both Ghislaine and her husband Louis Boillot are still there with Clément, discreetly in the background. They offer support and are still greeting visitors to ensure continuity.
I’ve already covered Domaine Louis Boillot Beaujolais and Domaine Ghislaine Barthod, and the wines from Domaine Louis Boillot were tasted with Clément from tank on March 31. Let’s go!
Domaine Louis Boillot Bourgogne Rouge 2020
The Louis Boillot estate has many different vineyards scattered around Burgundy. This makes it somewhat difficult to identify a line or a style in the wines. They are good – no doubt – but I do find quite some variation in the hedonistic qualities. The Bourgogne Rouge is fresh, vivid, and has nice depth for its level.
(Drink from 2022) – Good – (87p) – Tasted 31/03/2022
Domaine Louis Boillot Côte de Nuits Village 2020
The Côte de Nuits Village has a stronger terroir imprint. It clearly comes from an interesting terroir, as it shows character and edge. Not really singing due to less than fully ripe phenolics, but an enjoyable wine.
(Drink from 2023) – Good – (87p) – Tasted 31/03/2022
Domaine Louis Boillot Fixin 2020
The Fixin is from the area just below the Clos de Chapitre. A bit on the darker side, as they often are, this still has nice energy. I often find a slight austerity in the upper Fixins which makes them a bit more difficult in vintages like 2020 and 2016.
(Drink from 2027) – Good – (87p) – Tasted 31/03/2022
Domaine Louis Boillot Volnay Les Grand Poisots 2020
A big Volnay, this is rich and almost velvety. It’s relatively cool style-wise, but not particularly refined on the finish, with some edges being a bit rough.
(Drink from 2028) – Very Good – (88p) – Tasted 31/03/2022
Domaine Louis Boillot Beaune Epenots 2020
The Beaune wines from the southern part of the appellation do have a hedonistic trait. This is deep and fruity, quite dense, yet fresh, with the acidity a bit forward. Eighty-year-old vines help provide gorgeous depth.
(Drink from 2033) – Fine – (91-92p) – Tasted 31/03/2022 –
