It’s always useful to compare the wines from a vintage in a tasting, as this often reveals more of the vintage characteristics and puts the individual wine in perspective.
This year we had a collection of 14 wines from the 2009 vintage – mainly focused on the reds, and mainly on Cote de Nuits. The conclusions are based on all my tastings of the 2009 vintage, not only the wines mentioned in the tasting list.
Report – 2009 red Burgundy
The 2009 reds seem to be entering a semi closed stage, some wines more than others. Some wines did not show well at this tasting, while others performed as in earlier tastings. The village level seems more closed than the Grand Cru level.
The overall impression of 2009 is a quite hot year, where most wines are lacking a little acidity and freshness. The fruit can be rather dense, and in some cases sweet and almost overripe.
In my view 2009 is a fine vintage, but if you prefer classic Burgundy with vibrant fresh fruit and acidity, then look elsewhere.
On the positive side the 2009s offer good concentration and fruit at the village level, and many wines will provide excellent drinking. The 2009s are made for drinking … they are not delicate intellectual wines – but some of them are very deliciurs and well made.
Report – 2009 white Burgundy
The 2009 whites are mostly quite accessible and ready to taste. The quality picture is rather mixed, as some .. few .. producers have managed to make wines with a quite good acidity and freshness, while others .. most .. have made dense and quite heavy whites.
I would personally avoid most 2009 whites, but look out for the exceptions, as some producers have made splendid 2009s. Judged from my tastings of 2009 the quality is very uneven, just like in 2006, and while some wines are really fine, others are equally poor.
