Tasting of Comte de Vogue 2012 from cask

On my September trip to Burgundy I had the opportunity to visit Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé to taste the 2012 vintage from cask.

My expectations were very high when I arrived at Vogüé – but I must say that the 2012 vintage exceeded even my highest expectations – the 2012 wines from Vogue are stunningly gorgeous – and among the best wines I have tasted from cask at this fine domaine.

Notes from tasting September 13th, 2013

The Vogue 2012s are all extremely pure, crisp and transparent with a lovely positive energy and vibrancy. The expression of terroir is outstanding – the wines are crystal clear with a perfect view to the different terroirs – a tribute to Chambolle.

The fruit is very pure and cool with a lovely balance and a delightful inner energy. There is a delicate balance between red and dark fruit – and a fine tension between sweet fruit and the crisp acidity. Impressive and gorgeous – classic Chambolle – both good and great!

The 2012s are among the very best vintages I have tasted from cask at Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé – better than the 2010s – perhaps not – but they could be very close indeed.

Comte de Vogue, Chambolle Musigny 2012

The Chambolle village is a lovely effort. Slightly reduced on the nose, but still bursting with pure red and dark fruit – crisp with a lovely minerality. On the palate intense for this level with a transparent and vibrant fruit and a lovely energy. A very charming village Chambolle in the making.

Comte de Vogue, Chambolle Musigny 1er cru 2012

The Chambolle 1er cru is a step up in quality (made 100% from young vines on the Musigny vineyard). In the bouquet lovely red and dark candied fruit – infused with a lovely intense minerality. On the palate layers of crisp fruit – a lovely energy and tension – with a strong but refined backbone from the great Musigny terroir. Love the floral expression of the Musigny terroir – the positive energy and the balance – a gorgeous wine.

Comte de Vogue, Les Amoureuses 2012

The Amoureuses is truly gorgeous with a fantastic vibrant energy and tension. In the bouquet layers of red and dark fruit – blackberries, pomegranate and red forest berries, spiced with white peppar and a lovely crunchy minerality. It’s cool, pure and transparent with a vibrant energy and a very refined expression of the terroir. One of the best Les Amoureuses I have tasted from Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé – a truly delightful wine.

Comte de Vogue, Bonnes Mares 2012

The Bonnes Mares is darker as usual – but with a surprisingly vibrant energy. In the bouquet layers of red and dark fruit – blackberries, pomegranate and red forest berries, spiced with a lovely earthy minerality. It’s intense, pure and transparent with a vibrant energy. The fruit is weighty but still expressive with a lovely tension between the red fruit and the quite firm tannins and the fine acidity. One of the best Bonnes Mares I have tasted from Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé – a gorgeous wine.

Comte de Vogue, Musigny Vieilles Vignes 2012

The Musigny Vieilles Vignes 2012 is a masterpiece. The bouquet is is bursting with layers of pure and crisp pinot fruit – notes of blueberries, red cherries, pomegranate – infused with the multidimensional minerality of the Musigny terroir. On the palate layers of rich and almost velvet fruit – pure, crisp and transparent – it’s very expressive and energetic, and the fruit is perfectly supported by the very intense filigree minerality. It’s perfectly balanced and forward, with a lot of vibrant energy – a great Musigny in the making – a brilliant wine.
