Visit Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé – tasting of the 2016s

By Steen Öhman October 11, 2018Leave a Comment

Vogüé time .. tasting of the 2016s from bottle in Copenhagen + a few extra wines to add even more pleasure to the day.

As usual Jean-Luc Pepin is in Copenhagen for this early premier of the vintage .. what a treat.

Depressing quantities but magnificent quality

Just a recap .. Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé lost almost 70% of the 2016 harvest to the terrible frost on April 27th 2017.

The frost damaged the vineyards in the Chambolle appellation very badly – and this included the mighty Musigny vineyard – where Vogüé is the largest owner with 7.12 ha – equivalent to 70% of the full area.

The frost damage was almost unprecedented as the frost normally hit the low areas near the RN974 – and not areas at the top of the slope like Musigny.

With only around 30% of a normal harvest in the cellar the quantities sort of influences the feelings and emotions around the vintage – depressing to see all the empty and unused barrels in the Vogüé cellar – see photo below.

Tasting from cask in March 2017

Frost damage and generations

The frost on April 27 damaged the vines that were furthest in their development most, whereas other vines were less affected, if they were less developed.

In the Vogüé viticulture … in 2016 … the Guyot pruned wines were furthest in the development – thus these suffered the hardest damage.

The vines with Cordon pruning was somewhat behind in development on April 27 2016 .. consequently a part of these first generation berries survived the frost.

The result was that second generation Guyot berries were harvested, and some first generation Cordon pruned – and these wines created the lovely wines made from Vogüé.

The Chambolle 1er cru is mainly second generation Guyot berries. The rest of the wines are presumably a mix of second generation Guyot and first generation Cordon berries – as they in the end reached full maturity at the same time.

The Chambolle-Musigny village was not presented, as only a few casks were produced, and the wine will therefore not be offered on commercial basis in the 2016 vintage sadly.

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, Chambolle Musigny 1er cru 2016

The 1er cru – made from Musigny vines below 25 years – and due to the frost primarily second generation grapes (Guyot pruned). Currently rather forward – intense – the yield is “rather” low and the sort of sets the level. Fine concentration, a red coulis fruit, slight hint of rhubarbs currently, lacking a bit of depth compared to the mighty Musigny … perhaps the first generation berries are having an effect. It’s transparent and vivid … whats not to like!

(Drink from 2032) – Fine – (91 – 93p) – Tasted 05/10/2018

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, Bonnes Mares 2016

The Bonnes Mares is rich and very forward – with a beautiful balancing acidity. The bouquet is offering variations of darker fruits – cherries, blueberries, black currant – gorgeous balance – big wine with a lovely framework. On the palate it’s rich, vivid and very intense – with a vivacious energy. Currently rather forward, but would imagine that it could close down – for sure a wine for the long run. The energy of this wines is quite unique to be honest.

(Drink from 2036) – Outstanding – (94 – 96p) – Tasted 05/10/2018

And last but not least the two Musigny …
