Morning in NSG, looking at the coming week of harvest coverage
I will still follow the harvest, but the vignerons’ harvesting is more scattered and widespread.
There are some top-end vignerons still harvesting – Domaine Garcia, Domaine Georges Noëllat, Domaine Mugneret Gibourg, and some to start the harvesting, Domaine Cathiard and Domaine Gros Frère et Sœur… to mention a few.
Some of these are starting next week, so a closing phase of the 2026 harvest – we will see how these wines hold up with alcohol and pH.
The others will have a well-deserved Paulée … an early and a hectic harvest to say the least – often with smaller teams than usual as the recruitment was difficult due to the very early harvest.
The mood is mixed … and most are exhausted and tired … and I must say I miss a bit of the true fanatic joy that embraces certain harvests. Personally, I blame global warming that has squeezed the havest in to bigger team and a shorter timeframe … in the warm late summer weather … it has become exhausting in another way.
Some unstable weather with rain is awaiting in the forecast … this is really a joker with so much wine still in the vineyards unharvested.
Alcohol levels in Côte de Nuits
I like 12,5% to 13,5% in my ideal world, but this is beside the point … the answer will be in the bottle and in your glass.
The ripeness levels of the Chardonnays in Côte de Beaune were alarmingly high, with alcohol percentages between 14% and 15% or even higher.
It was therefore a blessing to see the first wines harvested in Vosne-Romanée, as these were in the 13,5% – 14% range… but with others well above 14%. I must say I don’t really understand this variation in alcohol, but it must be down to differences in the viticulture!
As a curiosity, I have heard potential alcohol above 17% mentioned, and one even beyond 18% – was not aware this was even possible! A crazy vintage indeed.
